The History of Clan Campbell - by Alastair Campbell of Airds
Alastair Campbell of Airds has finished the mammoth task of writing the History of Clan Campbell. This is a three volume set of hard cover books in A5 size. The books were commissioned by the Clan Campbell Education Foundation some seven years ago.
Alastair has done a magnificent job and the Education Foundation has not spared on the cost of producing this work. The three volumes will take a prominent place in my Scottish library.
You can purchase a set of these books from the Clan Campbell Society of North America for $US 99.00, or you can purchase the volumes separately. As it is more expensive to purchase them separately, I suggest that while the New Zealand Dollar is high, you bite the bullet and buy a full set.
Volume 1 deals with the origins of the Clan up to the time of Flodden.
Volume 2 deals with from Flodden to the Restoration.
Volume 3 deals with from the Restoration to the present day.
If you are doing Scottish research then these three volumes are a must, as the Campbells had so much to do with the history of Scotland.
Alastair has produced a very readable trilogy on the history of the clan. He has gathered the facts and woven them into a story that is easy to read. You will be able to guarantee the information contained in each volume, as Alastair does not put anything down as facts unless he has checked and double checked them. He spent thirteen years working on the Argyll papers in Inverary Castle, and from these papers gained a vast knowledge of Campbell History. Those of you who have met Alastair will remember him as a Highland Gentleman. I personally call him “the gentle giant”.
